A botanical book is not the same as a living specimen
Meise’s 2017 annual report places botanical collections and work in an institutional record. Use the book, specimen and catalogue as distinct evidence routes rather than treating a plant illustration as a complete identification.
The diagram in words: Book representation → Specimen and provenance → Catalogue and a bounded question.
Read the annual-report boundary
The recovered PDF has 146 pages and presents activity for 2017. It is an annual report, not a current opening guide or a new plant-identification manual. Extract the exact item and its context instead of turning an institutional summary into an unsupported claim about every object.
Separate three kinds of evidence
A botanical book shows how plants were represented and described. A preserved specimen can document material gathered at a place and time. A living plant changes with growth and season. A catalogue connects identifiers and provenance but does not replace the object. Each route answers a different question.
A completed reading exercise
Fictional card: source—botanical book; visible evidence—illustrated leaf outline; source evidence—title and publication record; unresolved—whether a local living plant is the same taxon. Compare the label and record, then ask what expert identification would require. Never infer edibility, medicinal use or safety from a resemblance.
Keep the dates separate
Record the book’s publication date, a specimen’s collection date and the institutional reporting year independently. A conservation or cataloguing activity in 2017 does not change an earlier object’s creation date. Where a field is absent, leave it absent rather than borrowing the report year.
A practical next step
Choose one book-related question and one specimen-related question. Save the relevant source page and object identifier if available, then verify present access with the institution. Our original diagram shows evidence categories; it does not copy a botanical plate or impersonate a specimen.
| Field | Example or check |
|---|---|
| Book | Representation and publication record |
| Specimen | Material, place and collection date |
| Unresolved | Living-plant identification and safety |
