The Empire Of Light

René Magritte

The object in context

Magritte brings a bright sky and a dark street into one scene. The archived campaign identified the Brussels painting of 1954; the title also belongs to a series, so an image with the same title need not be this version.

Try this when you look

Start by covering the upper half with your hand, then the lower half. What changes when you read each zone separately? Write one sentence explaining the contradiction without using the word “surreal”.

Before you visit

For a visit, distinguish the Royal Museums’ Magritte Museum from the artist’s former home in Jette. Consult the collection and current display rather than assuming that every version is in Brussels.

Original editorial diagram. A reading aid, not a reproduction or technical drawing of the object.
  1. Whole image — Describe the strongest visible contrast.
  2. Locate a detail — Follow a colour, gesture or line.
  3. Compare — Test your observation on a second work.
  4. Question — Ask what evidence could change your reading.
